I started writing when...Hmm, let’s see. When was Star Wars released? Better yet, when did the action figures show up in toy stores? Whenever that happened is probably around the time I started making up stories. And believe me, words and sentences meant nothing. Why should they? I was three, maybe four-years-old. However, looking back, I created a world filled with problems, characters, drama, death, suspense, bravery, and heroes, just not on paper. I was writing though, writing well.
Unfortunately, I never took the risk as a child to write out my epic basement battles. Sports? Uninspiring teachers? Laziness? Blame whomever or whatever. Who cares. I’m off and running, or should I say writing. Everyday in some way, I write. That’s what I do. It’s wired into my senses, powering the mind’s eye on the hunt for stories. Short stories, novellas, and picture books sit in my digital library, Some of them submitted for publication, some never see the sunlight. No worries. When you “do” something, you do it no matter what. If it brings you fame, makes you rich, or leaves you poor, so be it. You can’t put a price tag on passion. You do it, just because you love it to death.
I heard Bruce Coville, children’s Sci-Fi Fantasy author, brilliantly sum up my childhood: “The world is too small for the heart of a child.” Amen, brother. Adults too, I might add. Hobbits, Dragons, Frog and Toad...you name it. They all made me feel safe and secure in a world far from reality. I escaped. And still do today. I write for kids. To give a child an escape plan, a hearty laugh, or a pat on the back when the world is knockin’ them around is a great pleasure. It’s awesome! And not only for them. I mean, I see the planets, fly the spaceships and save the damsel in distress way before the reader does. Sorry, writing can be a little selfish at times.
